The offspring of previous South African President Jacob G Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terrorism-related allegations at the commencement of her trial in the harbor city of the city of Durban.

Zuma-Sambudla, 43, is being charged over statements she made on online platforms in the past during fatal protests in South Africa that followed the arrest of her dad.

A seven-day period of anarchy in various areas of the country in July 2021, including theft and arson, resulted in at least 300 individuals dead and resulted in damage worth an estimated 2.8 billion dollars (£2.2bn).

Zuma-Sambudla has been charged of encouraging this turmoil and is charged with accusations of provocation to commit terror acts and civil unrest.

History of the Legal Matter

The protests were focused in the areas of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal province and were triggered by the previous president's apprehension for disobeying a judicial ruling to testify at an probe into claims of impropriety while he was holding office.

The defendant has repeatedly denied the allegations against her, with her legal representative earlier calling the state's evidence as insufficient.

She has also repeatedly stated the accusations against her were an attempt to resolve political grievances with her parent after he started his own political party and competed against the ANC.

Backing and Legal Defense

This was echoed by the foundation, which stated the case was an "misuse of authority" and a "coordinated attempt" of "political and familial persecution" against the ex-leader and his kin.

A small number of backers from her group, uMkhonto weSizwe, gathered outside the judicial building, while her parent and other party leaders attended the court sessions inside.

The defense has argued that the testimony presented by the state is unconvincing and fails to provide substantial evidence for a conviction.

Main Aspects of the Case

  • Online comments from four years ago form the core of the prosecution's case
  • Fatal unrest in July 2021 resulted in significant casualties and economic losses
  • The defendant confronts multiple allegations of provocation to unrest
  • Judicial proceedings are anticipated to continue for numerous days

The legal proceedings continues as all parties present their evidence before the judge in what is anticipated to be a carefully observed legal battle with significant politically charged ramifications for South Africa.
