Democrats Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty
Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated outrage after the ex-president accused a coalition of Democratic congress members of being "traitors" and stated they should be detained and sentenced "by death" following their publication of a controversial video.
The Content That Triggered the Dispute
The video footage, published on earlier this week, includes six Democratic lawmakers who previously served in armed forces or defense capacities.
"Similar to us, you all took an pledge to safeguard and support this national charter," the representatives stated in the 90-second video. "At present, the threats to our democratic foundation are not only from abroad, but from domestically. Our regulations are unambiguous, you can refuse illegal orders, you can reject illegal orders, you must decline improper directives. No one has to follow directives that contravene the legal system or our constitution."
Donald Trump's Incensed Response
The recorded statement seemed to prompt a angry reply from the ex-president.
On the following morning, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional message, he declared: "This represents really bad, and Harmful to our Country. Their words cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent post, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also reposted a comment that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Representatives Respond
Following Trump's comments on that day, Top Democrats released a joint statement censuring the comments.
"Partisan aggression has no role in this nation," they wrote. "Elected officials who were featured in the video all served our United States with great loyalty and honor. We clearly censure Donald Trump's disgusting and risky calls for execution against elected officials, and call on House Republicans to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in touch with security officials "to guarantee the security of these officials and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must without delay take down these radical online messages and retract his aggressive discourse before he gets someone killed," the declaration stated.
Officials' Defiant Response
The representatives who participated in the video also published a response.
"We serve as ex-military personnel and security experts who love this country and took an pledge to protect and support the constitution of the United States," they said. "This commitment continues forever, and we plan to honor it. No warning, coercion, or call for violence will stop us from that fundamental responsibility."
"The significant point is that the president considers it punishable by execution for us to repeat the legal requirements," they continued. "Our service members should understand that we have their support as they execute their pledge to the national charter and obligation to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty."
They continued: "The entire nation must join forces and denounce the former president's demands for our execution and partisan aggression. This is a period for moral clarity."
More Governmental Reactions
The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's comments and published on digital platforms: "We must be absolutely clear: the President of the United States is requesting the capital punishment of elected officials."
He stated: "This is an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, every American – without partisan consideration – should denounce this right away and without qualification."
The Republican House speaker supported Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "rebellion", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "This represents very dangerous, you have prominent officials of the government telling soldiers to ignore directives, I think that represents unprecedented in the nation's past."
The GOP official also according to sources stated to the press that in what he reviewed of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the violation of treason" but that "lawyers have to examine the language and decide all that."
Executive Branch Response
During a administration briefing on that day, when inquired by a reporter, "Would the president want to put to death elected officials?", the executive branch representative answered: "No."
"We should understand about what the president is addressing," the official declared. "There are current representatives of the federal government who coordinated to arrange a video message to members of the US military, to current military personnel advising them to ignore the president's lawful orders."
She added: "The purity of our military relies on the chain of command, and if that chain of command is compromised, it can lead to people getting killed, it can result in chaos, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are basically supporting."
