US air traffic controllers are more and more seeking additional employment and reporting ill, as they remain on duty without pay amid the government shutdown, the transport chief has stated.

"The controllers are becoming strained," Sean Duffy informed a news outlet on the weekend, as some flights were halted on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

After the federal closure on October 1st, flight controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were told to continue performing their duties without pay.

But a number have been absent, causing terminals to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has exacerbated setbacks caused by climate and additional factors.

Over three thousand US flights were delayed on the weekend, and Duffy stated he expects the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the pressure," Duffy said in an interview on a weekend program, noting that he had spoken to several controllers to listen to their worries directly.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I work for Uber, am I able to secure another source of income to make ends meet?'" he continued.

The secretary added that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airfields said flights would be held up due to a shortage of employees - among the peak after the closure started.

The US government shutdown reached its twenty-sixth day on the weekend, rendering it the second-longest halt in history.

He has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would reduce the number of aircraft in the air if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he declined to respond straightforwardly when asked if it was secure to fly in the United States, and instead made a personal plea to controllers.

"I need my controllers concentrating on the flight paths, not on the finances at home," the official stated.

On Sunday, some planes were grounded at LAX due to staffing shortages, causing interruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the nation and among the most crowded in the world, as well as other flights extending upward to the city of Oakland.

The FAA alert went out at 08:45 local time on the weekend. Many flights were operating normally before noon.

Flights at Newark Liberty International Airport, however, were postponed an average of over an hour due to personnel issues, and the FAA said DFW, the second most active airfield in the country, could encounter problems from reduced staff later in the day.

The agency warned passengers in the state to consult carriers about revised flight schedules.

The issue precedes the third match of the championship, which is due to be played in Los Angeles on Monday evening, and approximately four weeks before the Thanksgiving holiday, among the peak times to fly in the US.

Strain on US air travel contributed to ending a government shutdown in two thousand nineteen. Back then, the halt had reached its fifth week and disrupted flight services, including pilot training.
