We are checking images and video shared this morning that depict the aftermath of a alleged car bomb blast that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the site from which the images were from relied on posts saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a nearby residential complex seen in the footage.
Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the footage were taken.
We also checked that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
