Larian Studios Explains Its Implementation of AI Tools for Upcoming Divinity

The studio behind popular role-playing games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin recently teased its next major project, generating immense hype within the player base. However, subsequent comments from the company's co-founder have introduced clarity to the conversation, focusing on the developer's stance toward machine learning.

A Tool for Ideation, Not Replacement

In a latest clarification, the studio's founder detailed that the developer is using machine learning for particular ancillary tasks. These encompass fleshing out pitch decks, producing early-stage visual ideas, and drafting placeholder text.

Crucially, Vincke emphasized that the final material in the game will be created exclusively by actual writers. "We are developing all the content in-house," he affirmed.

Larian is constantly growing our roster of writers and are currently forming dedicated writer rooms.

Since this area is being explicitly referenced — we presently have 23 concept artists and have roles to fill for more creatives.

Everything we do is additive and focused on letting our team spend greater focus on the creative process.

Any ML tool implemented properly is supplementary to a artist's routine, not a substitute for their skill.

Tempering Reactions with Clear Intent

The news of AI usage originally generated backlash among some the community. In reaction, Vincke offered further elaboration on public forums.

"Our team utilizes machine learning to research ideas, similar to we use Google and physical media," he explained. "In the initial ideation stages we use it as a rough outline for structure which we then substitute with original illustrations."

He continued, "Larian brings on talent for their unique talent, not for their ability to replicate what a machine suggests."

Focused Uses for Machine Learning

Vincke had earlier broken down the studio's practical approach to AI and ML, grouping its use into key functions:

  • Automation of Tedious Tasks: This includes polishing mocap data, audio processing, and Larian-specific work like adjusting assets for various species.
  • Accelerated Iteration: Using systems to speedily create basic mock-ups of scenarios to test concepts before complete implementation.
  • Future Potential for Gameplay: Exploring how AI could eventually facilitate new forms of player agency, particularly in managing dynamic reactions in a complex RPG.

He specifically stated that central narrative disciplines — such as music composition — are are in no way fields where the team is replacing creative talent. In fact, Larian is actively hiring in these exact fields.

"We are neither launching a game with AI-generated content, and we are certainly not considering cutting creatives to swap them out with AI," Vincke stated definitively.
