No less than 64 Dead in Rio's Biggest Law Enforcement Operation on Organized Crime

A minimum of 64 individuals were killed in a law enforcement action cracking down on the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's past.

Four police officers were among those killed during Operation Containment in the Alemão and Penha districts, local authorities stated. In excess of 80 individuals were detained.

Violent conflicts erupted when around 2,500 police forces entered the area on the morning of the operation. The Comando Vermelho reacted using armed resistance, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, officials said.

The International human rights organization stated it felt "shocked" by the police operation, calling for "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Operation Impact

The slum neighborhoods near Rio's airport is seen as the headquarters of a major organised crime groups.

State officials confirmed at least 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Many residents were injured, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Community Response

Locals have likened the elevated neighborhood - home to about 300,000 people - to a "war zone" since the raid started.

Criminal Expansion

The Comando Vermelho organization has been increasing their influence in the area, expanding narcotics distribution networks and dominance over the slum communities.
