Taliban Employed Left-Behind UK Equipment to Locate Afghans That Served With Western Forces, Inquiry Is Told

A confidential source has revealed an official investigation that British authorities abandoned classified devices enabling the militant group to identify local individuals who worked with international military.

Information Leak Endangers Thousands at Risk

The whistleblower, called Person A, testified that Afghans affected by the security lapse were told to change residences and switch their phone numbers to ensure their safety from the ruling authorities.

MPs are currently examining the Conservative government's handling of a massive leak of confidential data concerning approximately 19k individuals who had asked to move to the UK to escape the regime.

Data Disclosure Happened

A spreadsheet with confidential details, comprising identities, phone numbers and sometimes household data, was inadvertently disclosed by a worker stationed at UK special forces headquarters in February 2022.

The leak came to light in late 2023, when identities of nine people who had sought to settle in Britain surfaced on online platforms.

Regime's Resources

“There seems to be a misunderstanding that Afghan rulers are without comparable resources that we have,” she told the committee.

Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; they possess it. Should they obtain a contact number, they are able to track your exact position. That is what intelligence groups accomplished.”

When questioned about regarding if authorities owned necessary encryption, Person A declared: “They have complete capability.”

Consequences of the Security Lapse

Early investigations submitted to the inquiry suggested that at least 49 kin and associates of individuals impacted by the incident had been murdered.

A gag order concerning the leak was enacted in last year and restricted any information concerning it from public disclosure until mid-2025.

Protective Actions

Because she was restricted, Person A and the volunteer organization she collaborated with told affected households they were supporting that they had “concerns that somebody's phone had been breached”.

“Our suggestion was that they moved where feasible and switched their contact details. These represented the primary information that, should militant forces obtained this information, would result in identification and capture,” the source testified.

Challenged Assessments

Person A contested that an official review conducted by a former official had been mistaken to conclude that the possession of the information by the Taliban was “not significantly alter present danger”.

“The thing to remember is that these Afghans are not standing up to the authorities; they remain concealed. The primary issue involves former occupations.”

The source explained horrific violence suffered by concerned people, involving electric shock torture, simulated drowning, and violent assaults.

“Instances include four-year-old children who have had limbs fractured to pressure the family to say where someone is,” she testified.
