The Actress Says Speaking About Donald Trump Would ‘Intensify Divisions’ That’s Ripping the Nation Apart
The star has revealed that she no longer feels appropriate to comment publicly against the Trump government, worried it could exacerbate unhelpful debate and further divisions throughout the country.
‘I Question the Usefulness’, Explains Jennifer Lawrence
Speaking with media, Lawrence shared, “When Trump was first in office, I believed I was acting frantically like a chicken with my head cut off. But it’s become clear, over multiple voting cycles, Hollywood stars do not make a difference in any way on electoral choices.”
The actor went on, “What’s the point? I’m just expressing personal views on a matter that’s going to worsen tensions tearing the country apart.”
Changing Allegiances
Lawrence has previously been open about backing conservative and liberal contenders throughout her life. Raised by Republican parents in Kentucky, she voted for the Republican nominee in 2008 then moving to the Democrats and revealing she realized during the Obama era that voting Republican was opposing her own rights as a female citizen.
Earlier Remarks
Earlier in her career, she remarked that Donald Trump’s election would be “a disaster” and endorsed Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential race. More recently, she lent her support to Kamala Harris, “since I feel she’s an amazing candidate and I know that she will do whatever she can to defend abortion access.”
Industry Position
Lawrence was supported by most of Hollywood in her rejection of Trump as a returning figure, but the minimal impact stars have over the voting intentions was underscored by his election win.
“Another four years seems distinct,” noted the actress of his leadership. “Since he made his plans clear. We were aware of his actions for the previous administration. He was very clear. And that’s the option selected.”
Current Projects
The actor is highlighting the drama, Lynne Ramsay’s project in which she stars as a recent parent who faces challenges with her mental health in rural Montana. During a media event for the film in Venice, the star addressed Israel’s bombings in Gaza: “It’s frightening. It’s devastating. What’s taking place is no less than a genocide and it’s awful.”
Wider Issues
She continued by stating that she was disappointed by “the lack of civility in the discussions of the political landscape at present and how that is going to be accepted to the children right now. It’s going to be normal to them that leaders are untruthful.”
She attempted to refocus outrage about the issue to policymakers rather than entertainers. “Stay focused on the people in charge,” she advised, in what many took to be a nod to the recent commitment supported by numerous arts community members to refuse engagement with certain cultural organizations.
Relatable Experiences
Lawrence, who won an Oscar at a young age for her performance in the acclaimed film, is generating Oscar buzz for her portrayal in the new film. Even though Ramsay has disputed the plot being seen as one of maternal mental health issues and psychosis, Lawrence said that she did relate to parts of her character’s journey after the delivery of her new baby, shortly after shooting ended.
“There was concern regarding my baby,” she explained, “just picturing every worst-case scenario, and then second-guessing everything that I was doing. I was already in therapy, but I got on a treatment called that medicine and I took it for 14 days and it really helped.”
Professional Experiences
Jennifer Lawrence also spoke about the freeing requirement of filming without clothes in the movie while she was expecting and couldn’t work out.
“It’s refreshing,” she said, regarding the need to cast off vanity. “I mean, I do have moments where I’m like, How exactly do I differ between myself and a sex worker? But it doesn’t trouble me deeply.”
