The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.

An freshly coined term surfaced several months following the onset of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it signifies “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This designation is unique to Gaza, as stated by health professionals like paediatricians. Normally, it is rare for medical staff to attend to a child who has lost their complete family. Yet, there has been no semblance of normality regarding the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of children who have lost limbs is greater than that of any other region in the world. Nothing ordinary in numerous doctors returning from a landscape of rubble with accounts of children being intentionally shot at.

An Unimaginable Crisis Despite a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Gaza remains hell on earth. Critical healthcare resources are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations contend that violations are ongoing. Authorities disputes these allegations, just as it disavows everything it is implicated in. Meanwhile, while young survivors are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from advancing its declared purpose of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, although a number of European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Since this, we are told, is what global togetherness resembles.

Historically, Eurovision banned Russia from taking part in 2022 over the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza is treated differently.

Contradictory Principles

Disregard the reality that Israel was alleged to have used irregular participation methods last year in what seems to have been an effort to politicise Eurovision. Set aside the news that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Forget the fact that aggression from Israeli settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have surged. Disregard the condition that global media are still blocked from freely reporting in Gaza. None of this, evidently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On While Ignoring Profound Human Cost

The contest marks seven decades next year – almost double the current lifespan of an individual in Gaza now. The event will proceed, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the camp joy it historically embodied. A contest that was originally built on togetherness has devolved into a cynical way to whitewash war.
