The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Star Camara: From Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.
As I enter the room, Lamine Camara picks up a football he clings to throughout our chat. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a dream he has always held onto. “My sole focus was football; my mind was set on nothing else,” states the AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His determination and raw talent convinced teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the hardest person to convince was not a club executive or coach, but his own father. “He was against me to play football simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.
Surmounting Early Hurdles
Eventually, on “a special day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to pursue his path in the game. Another challenge was his small stature, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract.
Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the institution that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After he earned the MVP in a local competition, Génération Foot were “astonished” to discover he was not tied down. They moved fast. “They took me straight to the training centre. They didn’t want me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.
A Landmark Year and Continental Breakthrough
This move put him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his nation to the title and earning best player.
Soon after, he signed for Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” says the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his relatives encourage to keep him focused.
Inspiration and On-Field Identity
Distractions aren't a concern for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and superb playing qualities. He is also a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. Camara confesses a need to control his aggression, having been sent off early in his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he jokes.
Monaco, Teammates and Future Ambitions
With his current club, he cherishes learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” he said.
Currently, his focus is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. If you beat England on their soil…,” he says, pointing to a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
On a potential future move to the Premier League, he remains committed to Monaco at present. “I am very comfortable here,” he insists. However, he's often ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the senior top prize down the line.
“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England in their own country… it instills confidence.”
Looking ahead, Lamine Camara blends a modest start, unwavering focus, and big dreams as he aims to lead Senegal to continental glory and build his own legendary path in the game.
