The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Complete Confidence' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
When an teenage creates club a historic moment in a key Champions League match against City, it naturally attracts praise and attention.
In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time European champions secured a 3-0 last-16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The young player, who also had his Real debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted the Madrid side overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to confirm a quarter-final berth.
At 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by 10 days.
A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy
This talent is the most recent to come through from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.
He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in January.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, personality and determination he added to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'
In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the first team and awarded him playing time in pre-season.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against Benfica that led to the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing football, every day you go to train and every day you play a match," stated the player after his first appearance.
"I've just achieved my dream with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."
Handed a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.
The teenager has seized it with performances that have belied his youth and inexperience.
"He's a very quick footballer, and you can observe his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He's incredibly energetic, with excellent stamina, effort and mobility."
Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.
"His standout trait is his personality," added he. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.
"I understand fans might be astonished to see him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to do his normal game.
"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the first team. It is delightful to coach a talent like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before entering the club's famous La Fabrica system.
He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, giving him the choice to play for both nations at senior international level.
Under international regulations, players may represent multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a competitive senior international match.
He has featured for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and under-20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the last eight.
Despite this, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are watching his progress with interest.
Speaking recently, Pitarch said: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. Things are positive with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a decision in the near future."
This scenario echoes that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal opted for La Roja, Diaz opted to represent Morocco.
Focus on the Future
For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.
He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one victory at City, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight tie with Bayern Munich.
He was replaced by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to aid the club chase future success.
After his notable contributions so far on the Champions League, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.
"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I must deserve my playing time on the field," he said after the success at Manchester.
