Three Lions Coach Shares His Philosophy: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

A decade ago, Anthony Barry was playing in League Two. Now, his attention is fixed to assist Thomas Tuchel claim the World Cup trophy in 2026. The road from athlete to trainer started with a voluntary role coaching youngsters. Barry reflects, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and it captivated him. He discovered his purpose.

Metoric Climb

Barry's progression is incredible. Commencing in a senior role at Wigan, he built a standing through unique exercises and excellent people skills. His roles at clubs took him to elite sides, while also serving in coaching jobs abroad across multiple countries. He's coached stars like top footballers. Now, with England, it’s full-time, the peak as he describes it.

“Everything starts with a dream … But I’m a believer that passion overcomes challenges. You dream big but then you bring it down: ‘How can we achieve it, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ Our goal is the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. We must create a systematic approach that allows us for optimal success.”

Focus on Minutiae

Passion, focusing on tiny aspects, defines Barry’s story. Working every hour day and night, he and Tuchel challenge limits. Their methods feature psychological profiling, a plan for hot conditions ahead of the tournament in North America, and creating a unified squad. Barry emphasizes “Team England” and avoids language like “international break”.

“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a pause,” he explains. “It was vital to establish a setup that the players want to be part of and, secondly, they feel so stretched that going back is a relief.”

Greedy Coaches

The assistant coach says along with the manager as extremely driven. “Our goal is to master each element of play,” he states. “We strive to own every metre of the pitch and we dedicate many of our days on. We must not just to keep up of changes and to lead and set new standards. It’s a constant process focused on finding solutions. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“There are 50 days with the players prior to the World Cup. We have to play an intricate approach that offers a strategic upper hand and we must clarify it during that time. We need to progress from concept to details to knowledge to execution.

“To develop a process that allows us to be productive in the 50 days, we must utilize the whole 500 we’ll have had since we took the job. In the time we don’t have the players, we need to foster connections among them. We must dedicate moments on the phone with them, we need to watch them play, feel them, touch them. If we limit ourselves to that time, it's impossible.”

Upcoming Matches

Barry is preparing on the last two for the World Cup preliminaries – against Serbia at Wembley and in Albania. The team has secured a spot in the tournament after six consecutive victories without conceding a goal. However, they won't relax; quite the opposite. This is the time to reinforce the team’s identity, to gain more impetus.

“The manager and I agree that our playing approach should represent everything that is good from the top division,” he comments. “The athleticism, the adaptability, the robustness, the honesty. The Three Lions kit must be difficult to earn yet easy to carry. It ought to be like a superhero's cape not protective gear.

“To ensure it's effortless, we have to give them a system that lets them to operate similar to weekly matches, that connects with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They need to reduce hesitation and more in doing.

“There are emotional wins for managers in attack and defense – starting moves deep, pressing from the front. However, in midfield in that part of the ground, we feel the game has become stuck, particularly in the Premier League. All teams are well-prepared currently. They understand tactics – mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are focusing to focus on accelerating the game through midfield.”

Drive for Growth

His desire for development is relentless. When he studied for the top coaching badge, he was worried about the presentation, as his cohort featured big names including former players. For self-improvement, he entered difficult settings available to him to improve his talks. One was HMP Walton in Liverpool, where he also took inmates for a training session.

Barry graduated in 2020 at the top of the class, and his research paper – The Undervalued Set Piece, for which he analysed 16,154 throw-ins – became a published work. Lampard included won over and he recruited the coach to his team with the Blues. When Lampard was sacked, it spoke volumes that the team dismissed virtually all of his coaches except Barry.

Lampard’s successor at Chelsea took over, within months, they secured European glory. After Tuchel's exit, the coach continued in the setup. But when Tuchel re-emerged at Munich, he brought Barry over from Chelsea and back alongside him. The FA view them as a partnership akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
